Before I became a photographer, I wasn’t sure if the photographers I admired just woke up one day and took great photos, or if they had to pay tens of thousands of dollars and invest years to know what they were doing. So, when I started down the path of becoming a photographer, I quickly and humbly realized that it’s not something that you just wake up and know how to do… It’s also not something that can always be taught with a book and some time in a classroom. The way I learned (and continue to learn) how to be a great photographer, is by learning from the ones who are already great! When I first started, I was shocked to learn that there were two kinds of photographers out there… the kind that saw you as competition and wanted nothing to do with you, and the kind that were happy to take you under their wing and pay forward the good deed that someone had bestowed upon them once upon a time. For me, I was honestly so blessed to have (and still have) one of the greatest mentors the photography business has within it’s ranks. If it weren’t for this man, I honestly don’t know where I’d be today. Sometimes, I’m not sure he knows it, but I am forever filled with thanks and gratitude for his kindness, patience and amazing instruction so that I could follow my dreams. With that said, I still second shoot for him to this day, and quite frankly, I will for the rest of my days as long as he asks me to. I thank this man from the bottom of my heart for continuing to help me pursue my passion and dreams every single day. He didn’t just teach me to take great photos…. he taught me to be open, patient, kind, and to always help others when you can. Todays photos are from a wedding that was not booked with me as the primary shooter…. yet, as the second shooter tasked with getting all those amazing moments from the sidelines that are often times missed. The experience of shooting with another photographer always humbles and excites me! It reminds me that we are always learning, and to never forget the ones that have helped you along the way. SO! With that said, here are a few of my favs from my recent adventures in second shooting!!!
To my friend, and mentor (you know who you are), THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for seeing the potential in a girl who started with nothing but her camera and a dream. You are an amazing person, and I’m beyond blessed to have been taught by someone who bestowed upon me his incredible knowledge, and will to push through even when it’s difficult. You inspire and humble me with your talent and kindness. You, your beautiful wife and perfect son will always hold a special place in my heart. Forever thankful….
